Survivors: Sustenance is more art than science for Washington Performing Arts

Jenny Bilfield has a bit of a Silicon Valley mind.

After all, for more than six years, she ran an arts program at Stanford University, one of the nation’s seats of innovation.

Today, she’s tapping into those powers of creativity to reinvent the business model for the venerated, half-century-old Washington Performing Arts, a D.C. arts and education nonprofit that watched as Covid-19 wiped out its events and admissions revenue, which comprised 43% of last fiscal year’s $7.6 million.
